Beneficial ownership

A beneficial owner is the natural person who ultimately owns or controls a legal entity, directly or indirectly, or on whose behalf a transaction is conducted, regardless of who appears as the formal titleholder. Identifying them is what gives the rest of due diligence meaning: screening a company against sanctions lists without knowing its real owners allows a sanctioned person to operate behind an interposed structure.
